The Hackney and Private Hire (PHV) industry is essential to an integrated transport system. It employs over 250,000 drivers, in over 20,000 companies and provides continuous professional door to door service to millions of passengers on an annual basis.

There is often a criticism of taxi drivers who are portrayed as unfriendly, unhelpful and stereotyped to be like the drivers in soap opera backstreet style companies. For those who work in the industry we know that this could not be further from the truth; the taxi industry provides an essential service and one where the level of professionalism is generally very high.

A number of licensing authorities have introduced entry level skills and associated learning opportunities; however, these only address local problems, are not consistent and do not provide a framework for a programme based on the National Occupational Standards (NOS).

The BTEC Award Transporting Passengers by Hackney Carriage and Private Hire has been developed to provide a consistent standard across the whole Taxi Industry and provide Taxi Drivers with a meaningful and professional qualification. Currently the qualification is voluntary but the likelihood is that in the not too distant future it will become mandatory. Bournemouth Licensing has made the qualification a condition of licensing for all new drivers (within 6 months) and existing drivers (within 3 years).

CAB Business Solutions Limited has worked with Industry experts, listened to the industry – drivers and Taxi Operators and has tailored its training programmes accordingly. These consist of Induction and Delivery. Also, as an Accredited Test Centre with Edexcel we appreciate the importance of building a solution that meets the demands of the marketplace and is perceived as having real value.

Our programmes take into account driver knowledge, experience and based on this and an initial assessment, the driver will be offered training to suit their needs. The courses have one or two days classroom learning which are enhanced by workbook exercises, guided home study, online practice assessments and individual support where required.

All programmes, will take the driver through the required theory not normally gained by practical experience, focussed assessments, support and course handouts. It also will provide you with one sitting of the qualification assessment thus enabling you to gain your BTEC within a couple of weeks.

Standard prices range between £250 and £300 per driver, dependent on, location and number of drivers attending the course. *2

Note *1 - In the event of a failing an assessment no further charge will be levied.

Note *2 - based on a minimum number of course attendees, and where a course is outside of area travel and accommodation is charged separately.
