Overview Idea of the ‘Well Being Guide’ The idea of the ‘Well Being Guide’ is to benefit the drivers of hackney and private hire carriage vehicles. It is the intention to help raise awareness of the heavy demands put upon the body and mind from a job that can sometimes be less physically challenging. Unfortunately the less we ask our bodies to do, the less it will want to do in return, therefore the more likely it is for a driver to suffer health problems and be at risk of a number of health issues. Target candidate for the ‘Well Being Guide’ It is not the aim of the “Well Being Guide” to assess each and every individual, or even to stereotype any given individual. It is for each and every person to think about his or her own health and ask a few questions. Start by asking how often you sit waiting for your next fare and suddenly realise you are falling asleep. Perhaps you are fairly new to the trade and wondered why there are so many drivers of the fuller figure? It certainly isn’t from all the exercise! Will you still be healthy after a few years driving? Fortunately for the modern day driver obesity is not in the majority and probably best passed off with a frequent remark of “its good living that does it”. But obesity is an all too common sight not only noticeable in taxi drivers. Look how many long distance lorry drivers clamber out of their truck, searching for every step by feel because the paunch is blocking their view. How many coach drivers go into the motorway services and ask for a mineral water or a bowl of fruit? What’s in it for you? ‘Well Being’ is an individual decision. You can only benefit from the ‘Well Being Guide’ if you really want to. It’s not about diet and it’s not about running marathons. It is an individual goal, a decision that only you can make. What’s in it for you is really about the effort you put in. No amount of advice will ever help if the given individual doesn’t really want to make a change. However if you are starting to carry excess weight and noticing your clothing getting tighter, then it may be a good time to think about a change. Where is the catch and how much will it cost?
