Road passenger Vehicle Driving NVQ/ BTEC

 

What is an NVQ?

A National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) is a certificate of vocational education which demonstrates your competency in the work place. NVQs are available to people of all ages, and have no entry requirements. 

What is a BTEC Level 2 Award?

The BTEC Level 2 Award is a short programme of study.  The qualification is designed to be work-related and develop a specific set of practical skills and associated knowledge- see BTEC page.

BTEC short courses cover knowledge associated with NVQs and some associated practical skill development.  This provides a job-related qualification that prepares learners to enter their chosen area of work and subsequently to gain a relevant NVQ.  They can provide an attractive curriculum offer for adult learners and those who have not been involved in education or training for some time.

A BTEC Level 2 / NVQ Award may be taken full-time or part-time.


What are the entry requirements?

This qualification is available for learners aged 19 and over.  You will normally need to have at least one of the following:

 A standard of literacy and numeracy supported by a general education equivalent to
GCSE at grades D-G
 Related work experience
 A related Level 1 NVQ or other level 1 qualification

Learners must also meet the licensing and regulatory requirements of the sector, including age restrictions for certain types of licence.  It is essential to the completion of this qualification for new employees and learners to ensure they have the appropriate driving skills and licences.


What is the course structure?

The course is made up of seven units – six units which everyone takes and one of two specialist units.Then a short period of on the job assessment.

 What subjects will I study?

All learners take the following core units:

  • Customer Service for Passenger Transport
    Passenger Transport and Equal Opportunities
    Passenger Transport and Disability Awareness
    Taxi and Private Hire Safety
    Carriage of Luggage and Parcels by Taxi
    Route Planning
  • Taxi and Private Hire Regulations (UK)  or
    Taxi and Private Hire Regulations (London)

Followed by a period of in car assessment.

How  is the course assessed?

All BTEC / NVQ units are subject to external assessment and achievement of the qualification is through an externally set computer generated test.

Many organisations now stipulate NVQs for all their new contracts, so it will also increase your job prospects. An NVQ Level 2 is equivalent to five good grade GCSE examinations so it is well worth having.
"I was never any good at examinations."
Many drivers and are concerned that taking an NVQ will be like going back to school. But the training is nothing like school apart from having to sit in a room for two days. The aim is to make a record of your skills as a driver which is recorded in your logbook. If English is not your first language or your have reading difficulties, your trainer or assessor will help you record your entries.

"What does the training involve?"
The training usually consists of a two day classroom session and two on the road assessments. During the classroom sessions the trainer goes through a workbook and discusses subjects such as health and safety and customer service. Everyone contributes and is encouraged to get involved. All you need do is to enter your the answers into your workbook. You will also be given some questions to answer in your own time or on line.

For the on the road assessment, your assessor will accompany you while you are out on a normal run on at least two occasions. The assessor makes a record of your knowledge as a driver and your ability to manage the different aspects of your job. This is added to the information recorded in the workbook to make a compete record of your understanding and practical skills.

These vocational qualifications have been developed to enhance customer service and driving standards for the passenger transport industry. The BTEC/NVQ qualification reflects current legislation and codes of practice produced by Go Skills, the Sector Skills Council for Passenger Transport and the taxi industry .

Why do I need these qualifications?
Many Licensing Authorities now recognise these qualifications as a professional benchmark which they actively encourage all drivers and companies to aspire to. In response to advice provided by GoSkills several authorities are now considering making this a condition of licensing. How long will a course take?


The NVQ can take 4 – 6 months however; this period can be significantly reduced depending on your level of commitment to obtaining the qualification this will be carried out by one of our partner training providers or a local college. Our BTEC courses usually  run over 2 – 3 days.
